The New York Rangers announced that 54 players will attend their 2017 Training Camp on Wednesday. The New York Rangers took one step closer to hockey by announcing their training camp roster on Wednesday. Our first “going through the process” interview by Alain Vigneault will kick start us off on Thursday http://www.rangerscoolhockey.com/michael-grabner-jersey-c-19.html, September 14, at 2 30 PM. Players will then report for medical testing on Thursday. New York Rangers Training Camp Roster Announced Rangers 1a1a1a1shortcodeNEWrangers On ice sessions will begin Friday, September 15 , starting at 10 00 AM. There doesn’t seem to be many surprises on the roster, as all the newly acquired players this offseason will be in attendance. Keep an eye on http://www.rangerscoolhockey.com/nick-holden-jersey-c-21.html some key roster battles throughout camp, as the Rangers have done a good job of quietly adding under the radar players for competition. It appears the stage is set for the audition of fourth line center duty. With the addition of Andrew Desjardins, the veteran will battle youngster Cristoval Nieves and first round pick Lias Andersson for that role. However, the most interesting position battle will most definitely be on the defensive side of the puck. The top four look to be locked, with some sort of combination of Ryan McDonagh, Kevin Shattenkirk, Brady Skjej and Brendan Smith playing amongst the top two pairs. However, it becomes awfully murky for the final two spots. Marc Staal and Nick Holden are the clubhouse leaders, having the experience and bigger contracts . But young players like Anthony DeAngelo Magnus Hellberg Jersey, Neal Pionk, Alexei Berezglazov and Sean Day are nipping at their heels. This one will go down to the wire and will be fun to watch. Of small note, Filip Chytil is on the roster http://www.rangerscoolhockey.com/mika-zibanejad-jersey-c-20.html, so one can only assume he will be partaking in some shape or form. Hopefully, we will hear some good news on the extent of his injury. The Rangers kick off preseason games Monday, September 18th against the New York Islanders.

The Penguins opened the 2017 Prospects Challenge on Friday at HarborCENTER in Buffalo against Boston. The Bruins ended up defeating the Penguins, 3 2, in overtime. Sam Militec and Jordy Bellerive, here on amateur contract tryouts, scored for the Penguins. Thoughts, musings and observations… Daniel Sprong and Zach Aston Reese highlight Pittsburgh s roster for this tournament, and those two flanked Adam Johnson a coveted free agent out of Minnesota Duluth who signed with the organization after http://www.penguinscoolhockey.com/daniel-sprong-jersey-c-33.html attending development camp on the first line. It was a loaded line, and WBS head coach Clark Donatelli said he wanted them together because all three could skate and score. We saw glimpses of that today. Their first shift was their best, as Johnson used his speed to gain entry into Boston s zone and the trio created a couple of chances from there. Overall, it was a solid effort and one they can build on. I thought that line was solid for us all night and they re only going to get better going forward, so it was a good start for those guys, Donatelli said. We thought Sprong was going to be the overtime hero, as he found himself with time, space and the puck on his stick for a glorious scoring chance. And while it sailed high http://www.penguinscoolhockey.com/tom-sestito-jersey-c-31.html, it was still one of a number of quality opportunities for the 20 year old whose offensive ability is unquestioned. The thing about Spronger, what I really liked is that he had Grade A scoring chances, Donatelli said. He was taking pucks to the areas and he was shooting it. We interviewed Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan during the first intermission of our live stream on Penguins.com and the Penguins mobile app, and he mentioned Thomas Di Pauli as someone who stood out to him. The winger is coming off his first pro season, where he was limited to just 21 games while dealing with various injuries. He worked hard to get himself back in shape and told me before the tournament that he felt as good as he ever has on and off the ice. It showed on Friday. His speed http://www.penguinscoolhockey.com/dominik-simon-jersey-c-32.html was noticeable, as he used it to skate the puck out of his own end and down the ice to create scoring chances, and he also looked strong protecting the puck. Di Pauli said afterward that being nagged by injuries had hampered his ability to use that speed to create space, and now that he s 100 percent, there s a big difference. Now I just have to try and score some goals, because I had about 10 scoring chances and couldn t bury them, he said with a laugh Lukas Bengtsson is someone else who returned to game action on Friday after a lengthy absence while dealing with health issues. Last season he was diagnosed with POTS syndrome, a condition that affects blood flow. Too little returns to the heart when going from lying down to sitting up, causing constant fatigue and other symptoms. It s something he s dealt with for years, and now that he finally has the right diagnosis, he s moved forward with treatment and has learned to manage his condition. Today marked his first game action since Jan. 6, and as he said with a laugh, It was tough, I m not going to lie. But the coaching staff put the skilled, puck moving defenseman out to quarterback every power play , and gave him a decent amount of ice time, where he was impressive during his shifts. It s easy to see why the organization is so high on the Swede. I feel like I have a lot of work to do, but just keep playing Carter Rowney Jersey, he said. I had really short shifts, but had to do that to commit to the game. I felt like I played okay. It was my first game in eight months, so I m happy to be playing hockey again. Miletic and Bellerive played on a line with 2017 fifth round draft pick Jan Drozg, and Donatelli said that trio was one of their best. They were hard on pucks, they were good defensively, they played a simple game, Donatelli said. They got pucks to the net, went to the net , played with structure. 4

Perhaps my favourite part of the off season is crafting potential line combinations. When hockey is absent, it allows us to anticipate the coming season, to figure out how to arrive at the most optimal setup. Trevor did a great job looking at this from the Sens’ perspective, so this week I’ll be focusing on the numbers instead of what do we think the lineup will be, I’ll be looking into what I think the opening lineup should be. Over the course of this three part series, I’ll use a few different methods to determine some possibilities. Part one will be a method I’ve used before chemistry. A quick refresher on what I mean by chemistry it’s a description of how much better two players would play together, as compared to other options. I measure this by taking the Corsi of the combo together, and figuring out how much better/worse that is compared to how each player performed apart from each other. For example in this most recent season, Derick Brassard and Mike Hoffman had a Corsi of 57.52 when playing together, which is really good. When Brassard was playing without Hoffman, his went down to 52.52 , meaning he was better off with Hoffman than without. The same applies to Hoffman http://www.senatorshockeygear.com/marc-methot-jersey-c-24.html, as without Brassard his Corsi fell to 47.47 . Using this data we can find their chemistry score by adding up the differences Chemistry Score CF Together CF Player 1 Without Player 2 CF Together CF Player 2 Without Player 1 Chemistry Score 57.52 52.52 57.52 47.47 Chemistry Score 15.05 This is a classic example of a pairing with good chemistry. Positive scores mean good chemistry, negative scores the opposite. In this specific case 15.05 is considered high, meaning it might be a good idea to play Hoffman and Brassard together. We can apply this to the rest of the roster to figure out which combinations might be the most efficient. Defencemen The table below shows chemistry scores for all Sens defence pairings in 2016 17, with a minimum 100 minutes together and apart. It’s important that we apply the TOI limit to both sides, to limit any small sample sizes. I chose 100 minutes as the cutoff because I’ve found that after that point scores become less affected by TOI. Here’s the scores Chemistry Scores Defencemen Using this data, the Sens’ most optimal defence pairings last season would’ve been Claesson Karlsson Methot Ceci Phaneuf Wideman As interesting as this might be, this doesn’t tell us what it should be for next season, and we’re really just analyzing the past. The repeatability of chemistry scores is yet to be tested, and aside from that the Sens don’t even have the same players! The most prominent switch is that with Methot gone Matt Puempel Jersey, Erik Karlsson will need a new partner. Johnny Oduya and Thomas Chabot are both options and not listed in the data, although looking at the table it appears that Karlsson’s ideal partner should still be fellow countryman Fredrik Claesson. This makes sense, as Steady Freddy would give Karlsson a mobile partner to play off of, thus lessening the burden for the captain. It increases Karlsson’s impact because it allows him to have an extra passing option, the opposite of Methot who would steer clear of the offensive zone. With a chemistry score as high as 14.55, the highest on the list, I don’t see how that can be surpassed by Oduya or Chabot. Then we arrive at the second pairing. Because Karlsson’s so good and takes up the next few spots http://www.senatorshockeygear.com/cody-ceci-jersey-c-19.html, the next best pairing the team has available is Dion Phaneuf and Chris Wideman. Together they could create an offensively inclined duo as Ottawa’s second and third highest scoring blueliners last year. That leaves Cody Ceci on the third pairing. This might not be so bad, and you could make the case he should take a step back and play some weaker competition after getting caught too often in the defensive zone last year. He would presumably start alongside Oduya, although this could all change depending on what results we start to see. I would avoid putting him next to Mark Borowiecki, as together their chemistry score was a frightening 5.05. Using chemistry scores, the Sens’ optimal defence pairings should be Claesson Karlsson 14.55 Phaneuf Wideman 4.41 Oduya Ceci N/A Forwards The forwards are a bit more tricky, simply because there’s three of them on a line. To account for this, I took all possible three forward combinations that met the TOI requirements and the average of their chemistry scores. For example, Dzingel and Brassard had a score of 9.28, Dzingel and Stone had a score of 1.36, and Brassard and Stone had a score of 1.07. If you take the average of the three, you get a new line score of 3.90, which would presume that the line of Dzingel Brassard Stone has positive chemistry. The following table has all of the Sens’ possible combinations, thanks to Guy Boucher’s tendency to blend forward lines. With that data, we can make an optimal top 9 unit of Hoffman Brassard Stone 11.64 Smith Turris Ryan 0.82 Dzingel Pageau Pyatt 7.27 It’s worth noting that although a line may have a high chemistry score, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re better. http://www.senatorshockeygear.com/erik-karlsson-jersey-c-22.html It just means that the combination is a more efficient use of talent, which is seen in the third line above. Line 2 combined for 2.34 goals per 60 minutes in 2016 17  whereas line 3 combined for only 1.77. I should also note that although the second line has a negative score, it’s needed to enable the two high chemistry lines. Now we have to work in the missing players, similar to how we managed the defencemen. Alex Burrows and Nate Thompson should be on the 4th line. The biggest notable omission is Clarke MacArthur, who spent most of last season on the IR. He could be a potential aid to that negative second line, as he posted a positive score next to Turris during his last full season in 2014 15, as well as during the most recent playoffs. He’s performed worse next to Ryan in both those scenarios, however, so maybe some lines should be shuffled accordingly. But for now, in terms of available options, Ryan may end up being the best one. That would shift Zack Smith down to the 4th line. Hoffman Brassard Stone 11.64 MacArthur Turris Ryan N/A Dzingel Pageau Pyatt 7.27 Smith Thompson Burrows N/A

As the 2017 18 NHL season comes closer and closer, a certain group of New Jersey Devils fans have been receiving something from the team. The group season ticket holders. The something their tickets for this season. I am a member of that group and in recent years, the Devils have sent out a full package with the tickets. It’s something to look at and one more sign that we are getting close to Devils hockey again. So here is what this year’s package looks like. I’m not the best photographer and my phone camera isn’t the best so bear with me if these aren’t perfect. The 2017 18 Devils season ticket box The 2017 18 Devils season ticket box Taken personally In the envelope was a decently sized box. What you see is what you get. It’s a Devils logo, it says “35 Year Anniversary” instead of 35th for some reason, and there are three silhouettes Stanley Cups at the bottom. There really wasn’t anything interesting on the sides. It’s quite red. Pretty boring. But we don’t judge books by their covers http://www.devilsteamgear.com/cory-schneider-jersey-c-28.html, so why should we judge boxes like that? Let’s open it up. The inside flap of the 2017 18 Devils Season Ticket Box The inside flap of the 2017 18 Devils Season Ticket Box Taken personally On the left are pictures of the names of the three Devils teams to have earned the Stanley Cup. It’s good for nostalgia. The reflection in the picture it is in the picture, it’s not the lighting from my amateur photography makes it a bit hard to see, but they’re all there. On the right a black flap with a new slogan Stronger. Faster. Together. The Devils weren’t much of, say, “fast, attacking, and supportive” by the turn of the last season. With new players coming in and a number of players leaving the organization this summer, it is entirely possible that they can be stronger and faster than before. They’ll have to play together by default. This is a slogan the 2017 18 Devils can possibly support. We’ll see if they do, though. Moving on to the inside of the flap Inside the flap is a message from Devils GM Ray Shero. Inside the flap is a message from Devils GM Ray Shero. Taken personally There is a message from Devils general manager Ray Shero. It’s a standard, boilerplate “Thank you for being our fans” letter. It does correctly note that this is the 35th anniversary of the Devils being in New Jersey not that this is the 35th season. Well done, Mr. Shero. What stood out to me is the sentence “The pieces are coming together as we add to our foundation, and we’re heading in the right direction.” In case you were doubting the Devils were still re building, there’s another piece of evidence showing that they are. This is a re building year and the Devils noted that to the season ticket holders. I do hope the pieces are coming together. Extended re builds are no fun and bad for business. What’s more interesting is what the flap was covering. There was a small membership guide booklet inside first. It tells you about the various benefits and such. And to try out the Devils app, which is really the NHL’s app. Anyway here are the goods. The 2017 18 Devils Season Ticket and Pin The 2017 18 Devils Season Ticket and Pin Taken personally At the top is a 35th anniversary pin. I like the design and it’s a sharp pin. Good job. Below it is the season ticket. They call it a credential. I’m calling it a ticket as it gets me in the door. For the past few seasons, the season ticket holders would get an over sized plastic ticket that acted as the whole package. It would come with a lanyard and a plastic sleeve that the ticket can sit in. Perfect for preventing spills and protecting it from the elements. This year, well, it’s a wider ticket. Whereas the 2016 17 Devils season ticket fit in nicely in the sleeve, the new ticket will not. I just checked. So the Devils fans will get to find their own ways to protect it. Why is it wider? I couldn’t tell you. I also couldn’t tell you why one side has the QR code not pictured and quite small but the other doesn’t. At least the design of the ticket is fancier. As it is the 35th year of the Devils being in New Jersey, it’s a collection of past and current Devils. From the top left and clockwise it’s Claude Lemieux, Andy Greene, Travis Zajac, Ken Daneyko, Patrick Elias, Chico Resch, Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique, Scott Niedermayer, and John MacLean. Martin Brodeur is right in the middle. It’s a who’s who of Devils and someone critical is missing. No, not Lou Lamoriello although that would be a good choice too . Why there’s no picture of Hall of Famer, legendary defenseman, hit machine, and captain, 4 Scott Stevens! This is astounding! There are four soon to be five retired numbers in the rafters. How does one forget about Scott Stevens!? I get it, it’s a collection of past and present Devils. But would anyone really want to see, say, Zajac who I like, by the way at the expense of Scott Stevens? I checked this at least ten times to make sure I’m not going mad here. I don’t think I’m missing him and, if so http://www.devilsteamgear.com/customize-jersey-c-30.html, whoever designed this blew it here. The ticket design being too wide for past sleeves is annoying and the picture wasn’t on point. At least it has the tickets. Lastly, you know what else this ticket is missing? The seat number. How am I to prove to the usher or anyone else that I sit in Section 1, Row 16, Seat 5 with this? Last year’s ticket had it boldly printed at the bottom. That was easy. Not so this year. This is a bigger problem than a severe lack of Scott Stevens in the photo. I fear this may be all a ploy to use the app for everything which is a real let down to require use of my own stuff given how much I’m paying for a season ticket. Seriously Travis Zajac Jersey, for the amount of money I’m paying, I don’t think this is too much to ask. The 2017 18 Devils Membership card and lanyard The 2017 18 Devils Membership card and lanyard Taken personally Behind the big ticket is cut out for a new Devils membership card and a lanyard. The Devils membership card is used to store money that can be used for food and merchandise. The membership card can be attached with the lanyard hook, but it fits perfectly in your average wallet. It begs the question Why doesn’t this card have the tickets on it too? The New York Red Bulls have done that for years where tickets and money/credit can be stored on the same convenient card. They’re just down the road in Newark; surely the Devils can ask someone there how it is done. Alas, it is what it is. The lanyard is, well, it’s a lanyard. It does a good job of hooking onto things and wearing it around your neck. That’s it in my package. The black foam in the box can be removed. There was nothing underneath my foam. I was half expecting a plastic sleeve for the big and wide plastic season ticket. Nope. The foam is just removable. I suppose if you want to use it to store things and you want a Devils themed red box for it, then you can do so. At the end of the day, it’s all about the ticket. If it gets me into the Rock and into my seat, then that’s pretty much what I paid for. But this year’s ticket is a disappointment. The box design is simple, which is no big deal but it should try to make me think it’s a big deal to have it. I have a membership card that may or may not get used that strangely doesn’t get used for tickets. I have an oversized season ticket that has the game tickets but has no seat information in my section and doesn’t fit in any past plastic sleeves to protect it. The ticket graphic doesn’t even fully represent all of the http://www.devilsteamgear.com/keith-kinkaid-jersey-c-27.html Devils’ legends. At least the pin and the lanyard work. This first impression is a downgrade from last season for sure. I’m left feeling disappointed. And a bit confused. This doesn’t seem difficult to me. Make a package that’s visually appealing, make a ticket or credential that isn’t obnoxiously wide or tall, put a design on it that won’t make people go “Where’s this legend?,” and ensure that the ticket has the seat location on it. But, hey, I’m just a hockey blogger. What do I know? When one considers with the fact that the Devils sales department supposedly cleaned out their reps and replaced them again, and I really question what’s going on the business side of the organization. Did you receive your season tickets yet? What do you think of the membership box? What’s going on with the sales department? Please leave your answers and thoughts about all this in the comments. Thank you for reading.
